In 1930, Pluto made his screen debut in the Mickey Mouse cartoon "The Chain Gang".  He was first introduced as Minnie's dog, Rover in "The Picnic", but finally in "The Moose Hunt", he became Mickey's faithful dog, Pluto. 

Pluto has appeared in many of his own cartoons, but he has also appeared along with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy.  Unlike Goofy, Pluto was created as an actual dog, with no speaking voice.

Pluto was actually named after the planet Pluto which was discovered in 1930, the same year the his character was born.
